Winding the bobbin

1. Draw thread from spool through bobbin Winder tension disc.

2. Wind thread around an empty bobbin several times.

3. Place bobbin onto bobbin winder shaft with thread wound on bobbin clockwise. Push bobbin winder latch against bobbin until it clicks.

4. Release clutch by turning clutch knob towards you. Start Machine.

5. Wind bobbin is full, winding mechanism stops.

6. Tighten clutch knob and remove bobbin.

Threading the bobbin case

To remove bobbin from the shuttle, raise needle to its highest position. Remove hand hole cover plate.

1. Pull open latch of bobbin case.

2. Pull bobbin case straight out of the shuttle.

3. Insert bobbin into bobbin case making sure thread is coming from bobbin.

4. Pull thread through slot of case.

5. Pull thread under tension spring.

6. Holding latch open, position case into shuttle, and release latch. Case should lock into place when latch is released.

7. Hold needle thread loosely and left hand and rotate handwheel towards you one complete turn.
Bring bobbin thread up by pulling upper thread.

Checking tensions

To check the thread tension balance, be sure to use thread of the same size on the top and on the bottom; and a sharp correct size needle for the fabric you are using. Begin with a full bobbin. Set the Stitch length for about 12 stitches per inch.

Fold a 6 inch square of fabric in half diagonally, forming a triangle. Make a line of stitching 1/2 inch in from the fold.

Examples:
Seam is puckered – both tensions are too tight.

Bottom thread lays on the fabric – tighten upper thread tension, and repeat test.

Top thread lays on the fabric – loosen upper thread, and repeat test.

Grasp the stitching and pull with a snap to make the threads break.

Both threads break – tensions are balanced.

Examples:
Neither thread thread breaks – both tensions are too loose.

Upper thread breaks – loosen top tension.

Lower thread breaks – tighten top tension.

Both threads do not have to break at the same place, but they should break on the same snap.

It is necessary to reduce the upper thread tension somewhat when zigzag stitching. The wider the stitch the less tension that is needed.

Removing the bobbin

Open slide plate and lift out bobbin.

Winding the bobbin

Loosen stop motion screw with right hand.
Place empty bobbin on spindle.
Press bobbin winder down against hand wheel.
Place spool of thread on spool pin.
Thread between tension discs and through bobbin as shown.
Hold end of thread and start machine.
(End of thread will break off after a few coils have been wound on the bobbin.)
When Bobbin it is full
Stop Machine.
Lift bobbin winder away from hand wheel and remove bobbin.
Tighten stop motion screw.

If thread doesn’t wind evenly

Loosen screw which holds bobbin winder tension bracket to machine bed.
Move bracket to left if bobbin winds high on the right.
Move to right if bobbin winds high on the left.
Tighten tension bracket screw.

Threading the bobbin case

Hold bobbin so that thread leads off and direction shown.
Place bobbin in case.
Lead thread into slot and under spring.
Draw thread into notch at the end of spring; pull about 3 inches of thread across bobbin.
Close slide plate.

Stitch length regulator

Numerals on left side of indicator represent number of stitches per inch.
Numerals on right side represent stitch length in millimeters.
Upper incline area of the regulator represent stitch length above 20.
Lower inclined area of the regulator allows the stitch setting to be locked in place when
stitching folds, pleats or multiple layers of heavy fabric.

To set Stitch length

Release pointer by turning thumb nut to the left.
Position lever for desired Stitch length.
Tighten pointer against plate by turning thumb not to the right.
What’s the pointer has been positioned, reverse stitching is accomplished by raising a lever to its highest point.
The locked position must be unlocked for reverse stitching.

Adjusting Stitch length

The stitch length selector controls the length of stitches.
The numbers around the edge of the selector dial express stitch length in stitches per inch; the higher the number, the shorter the stitch.
Generally, the shorter stitches are best for lightweight fabric; longer ones for heavy fabric.
The FINE area is used for the adjustment of the zigzag satin stitching.

Adjusting pressure

The pressure dial regulates the pressure that the presser foot exerts on the fabric.
Correct pressure is important because it enables the fabric to feed smoothly and evenly, without being marred.
The NORM (Normal) setting is an all-purpose setting that can be used for sewing a wide variety of fabrics of different weights and textures.
Intermediate notched settings above and below NORM (Normal), are also provided.
When you need extra control, regulate the setting for heavier or lighter pressure to suit the fabric being sewn.

When darning without an embroidery hoop, set the dial at the lowest setting, DARN.

Lower the presser foot before setting pressure.

To increase pressure, turn dial from NORM (Normal) towards MAX.

To decrease pressure, turn dial from NORM (Normal) towards DARN.

For darning, set dial on DARN.

Regulating thread tension

Correct tension is important because too much or too little will weaken your seams or cause your fabric to pucker.
Make a test sample with the fabric and thread you plan to use and examine it.
A perfect stitch will have the needle and bobbin thread locked between the two layers of fabric with no loops on top or bottom and no puckers.

Needle thread tension

The tension dial regulates the degree of tension on your needle thread. Set it accordingly to the type of thread and fabric you use. The numbers on the dial eliminate guesswork and duplicating stitches.

If the stitches in your test sample look loose, increase needle thread tension. If the fabric puckers, decrease tension.

To increase tension, turn dial to a higher number.

To decrease tension, turn dial to a lower number.

Choosing needles

The needles you use should be straight to ensure perfect stitch formation. The needle should also be fine enough to prevent the fabric from being marred with large punctures, yet heavy enough to pierce the fabric without being bent or deflected. The eye of the needle must be large enough for the thread to pass through freely, too find a needle will cause the thread to fray.

For general-purpose sewing in a wide range of fabrics, the Style 2020 needle in sizes 9 through 18, will give you excellent results.

To obtain best results when sewing on knits, woven stretch fabrics, bonded vinyls and elastic use Style 2045 ballpoint needle, available in sizes 9, 11, 14 and 16.

For decorative stitching on light and medium-weight woven and knit fabrics, use the twin needle Style 2025.

Sewing leathers, real and simulated, the Style 2032 needle works well.

Refer to the Fabric, Thread and Needle table for correct needle and thread for your fabric.

Changing the needle

Disconnect the power line plug from the socket outlet before changing needles.
Raise needle to its highest position by turning the hand wheel toward you.
Loosen the needle clamp screw and remove the needle.

Insert new needle up into the clamp as far as it will go, with the flat side of the needle to the back.

Tighten needle clamp screw
