Changing needles

Raise the needle by turning the balance wheel toward you and lower the presser foot. Turn off the power switch.
Loosen the needle clamp screw by turning it towards you.
Remove the needle from the clamp.
Insert the needle into the needle clamp with the flat side away from you.
When inserting the needle into the clamp, push it up as far as it will go and tighten the clamp screw firmly with the screwdriver.

 

Winding the bobbin

Lift up the spool pin. Place the spool of thread on the holder with the thread coming off the spool as shown.
Attach the large spool holder pressing it firmly against the thread spool.
The small spool holder is used with narrow or small thread spools.

 

Additional Spool Pin

The additional spool pin is used to wind extra bobbins without unthreading the machine.
To use, insert the additional spool pin in the hole. Place the felt and the spool on the pin.

 

Remove the bobbin

Gently push down the slide plate and pull it out onto the extension table.
Lift out the bobbin.

 

Threading the bobbin Winder

Pull the clutch knob away from the machine to disengage clutch.
Draw thread from spool. Hold the upper thread with both hands as and press it downward against the hook until it comes down under the hook. Guide the thread around the bobbin winder thread guide. Insert the thread through the hole in the bobbin, threading from the inside to the outside. Put the bobbin on the bobbin winder spindle and push it into the right.
With the free end of the thread held in your hand, depress the foot control.
Stop the machine when it has made a few turns, and cut the thread close to the hole in the bobbin. Depress the foot control again. When the bobbin is fully wound, it will stop automatically.
Return the bobbin winder to its original position by moving the spindle to the left, and cut the thread.
Push in the clutch knob to engage the clutch.
The machine will not sew until the clutch knob is pushed in.

Threading of top thread

Place thread on spool pin as shown with thread coming from the back of the spool.

Draw thread through the top thread guides.

Holding the spool stationary with the right hand, pull the ends of the thread between the tension discs as shown.

Pull the spring wire loop up and past the top of work until the thread can be slipped into the hook.

When the thread is released, the spring wire loop will return to position with thread and proper place.

Release spool of thread and continue to thread machine exactly as shown.

Needle must always be threaded in direction as shown in figure 3.

 

Winding the bobbin

1. Draw thread from spool through bobbin winder tension discs.
2. Wind thread around an empty bobbin several times.
3. Place bobbin onto bobbin winder shaft with thread wound on bobbin clockwise.
Push button winder latch against bobbin until it clicks.
4. Release clutch by turning the clutch knob towards you. Start Machine.
5. When bobbin is full, winding mechanism stops.
6. Tighten clutch knob and remove bobbin.

 

Threading the bobbin case

1. To remove bobbin from the shuttle, raise needle to its highest position.
Remove hand hole cover plate.

2. Pull open latch of bobbin case.

3. Pull bobbin case straight out of shuttle.

4. Insert bobbin into bobbin case making sure thread is coming from bobbin.

5. Pull thread through slot of case.

6. Pull thread under tension spring.

7. Holding latch open, position case into shuttle and release latch. Case should lock into place when latch is released.

8. Hold needle thread loosely in left hand and rotate handwheel towards you one complete turn. Bring bobbin thread up by pulling upper thread.

Setting thread tension – Singer 2273 Sewing Machine Instruction Manual

Upper thread tension

Basic thread tension setting “4”

Increase the tension, turn the dial to the next number up.

Reduce the tension, turn the dial to the next number down.

A. Normal thread tension for straight Stitch sewing.

B. Thread tension too loose for straight stitch sewing. Turn dial to a higher number.

C. Thread tension too tight for straight stitch sewing. Turn dial to lower number.

D. Normal thread tension for zig zag and decorative stitching.
Correct thread tension is when a small amount of upper thread appears on the bottom side of the fabric.

 

Lower thread tension

To test the bobbin thread tension, remove the bobbin case and bobbin and hold it by suspending it by the thread. Jerk it once or twice. If the tension is correct, the thread will unwind about an inch or two. If the tension is too tight, it does not unwind at all. If the tension is too loose, it will drop too much.
To adjust, turn the small screw on the side of the bobbin case.

 

Please note

Proper setting of tension is important to good sewing.

There is no single tension setting appropriate for all stitch functions, thread or fabric.

A balanced tension (identical stitches both top and bottom) is usually only desirable for straight stitch construction sewing.

90% of all sewing will be between “3” and “5”.

For zig zag and decorative stitching stitch functions, thread tension should generally be less than for straight stitch sewing.

All decorative sewing you will always obtain a nicer stitch and less fabric puckering when the upper thread appears on the bottom side of your fabric.
